filigree torah pointer (yad l'torah)

TORAH POINTER

silver, lapis stone

A diminutive pointer is employed when the Torah is read aloud in synagogue.  It is considered sacrilegious to touch the parchment of the Torah scroll with bare fingers, but the reader needs to keep track of his place in the portion being read for the particular week of the year.
